The Predicament of a Seductive Crossover Book
Auke van der Woud’s new book is a must for everyone interested in the second half of the nineteenth century, particularly the consequences of spatial change. His book has all the virtues and vices of a crossover book, that is one which appeals to two different audiences. It is a book based on new research written for the general reader. Therefore, it is not clear enough with regard to various scientific questions. More explicit attention for the role of industrial capitalism and the process of democracy would have enriched the book even more.
This review is part of the discussion forum 'Een nieuwe wereld' (A. van der Woud).
